I Love Tarot!
A deck of tarot cards consists of 22 Major Arcana ("Greater Secrets") and 56 Minor Arcana ("Lesser Secrets"), creating a deck of 78 cards. The majors relate to important ideas and turning points in life. The minors are associated with the more everyday aspects of life.
Some decks have only majors. These can be very beautiful art decks, but are a bit restricted for readings. Other decks add extra cards - you'll soon get used to looking for any differences and discovering what you prefer.
TAROT BASICS - Getting Started
The minors consist of 4 suits, usually called Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. They are like normal playing cards, with the number cards Ace through 10, and court cards. There are 4 court cards to each suit rather than the normal 3. These are usually called Page, Knight, Queen and King.
Traditionally, the number cards have been 'pip' cards, like playing cards. So the 5 of Wands will show a pattern of 5 wands, the 8 of Cups will show a pattern of 8 cups, and so on. Only one early tarot deck is known to have scenes instead - the Sola Busca Tarot - but the majors of this deck are not what are usually associated with tarot nowadays.
Why mention all this? Because now there are hundreds, if not thousands, of decks on offer and many tarotists find the style important - pips or scenes. You will come to know your preference, but in Tarot Basics you will find scene cards. It is probably the best way to learn tarot.
